How To Remove A Stubborn Wedding Ring

Generally people leave their wedding rings on their fingers for many years. Often this practice results in rings getting stuck. Think about it, if a ring is in place for a long time, changes to the finger may occur that will make removal difficult. Weight gain and injury are two common aspects that cause rings to become firmly stuck onto a finger and difficult, if not impossible, to remove.

One of the reasons that wedding rings so easily get stuck is that many people simply don’t take them off. Oftentimes we also choose wedding bands that fit snugly. However, over the years, if you gain a little weight, all of a sudden the size of your finger can expand. If someone injures his or her ring finger, it can also end up changing the size.

One important rule of thumb in trying to remove a ring that is stuck is that you shouldn’t force it. If you are feeling pain at any time during the process it is time to stop. Believe it or not people have actually damaged their fingers just trying to take off rings.

The first step is to try to reduce any swelling in your hand that might be taking place. Soak your hand in icy water. Also often holding your hand up above your heart can sometimes get it to reduce in size. Be sure to try to get the ring off of your finger later in the day, as our hands tend to naturally be the most swollen in the mornings.

If your ring cannot be removed using one of these simple methods, it is possible that you will need to have your ring professionally removed by a jeweler. When this occurs, jewelers generally cut the ring off using special tools. This is often a difficult and slightly traumatic situation for many.

Sadly, often those who can’t remove their wedding rings often end up getting the rings cut off the finger by a jeweler. Of course, this can be easier said than done depending on what kind of metal your wedding ring is made from. For example, because tungsten rings are so incredibly strong, they can’t be cut with a regular pair of metal cutters. In fact, there is currently an urban myth that says when tungsten rings get stuck the only solution is to remove the finger! This myth isn’t at all true. The truth is that a pair of pliers will easily shatter tungsten rings. However, if this procedure is absolutely necessary, it is best to have it performed at a hospital.
